The Set Up: Chili Cook-Off

The Set Up: Chili Cook-Off

Posted by Jennifer Burch on

Occasion: chili cook-off
Location: my kitchen table
Must Haves: cozy and relaxed

For some, there is an entertaining slump after the holidays so we loved seeing this chili cook-off request. No slump for this hostess! We can already picture the cozy, relaxed atmosphere she’s going for and have enjoyed envisioning the scene - friends gathered around her kitchen table laughing (and competing)!

We know the main event is likely covered with family recipes and old favorites, but we wanted to share our favorite chili recipes here just in case. Margaret swears by Modern Proper’s award-winning chili and Jen loves this one (pro tip: add a dash of cinnamon). For appetizers, we would keep it on the lighter side with guacamole and chips, and salsa (served in our Revere Bowls). We would encourage you to have cornbread to serve with your chili. Regardless of which recipe you choose, it will be a crowd pleaser.

For drinks, we would definitely recommend several six packs of beer served in our pewter ice tub. For the non-beer drinkers, we would serve a winter margarita in our smokey blue striped rocks glasses. We love this recipe. And of course, if your guests transition to wine, we would pull out our starry wine glasses for the crowd.

We know a relaxed atmosphere is important to you, so we’re keeping the table simple. No need for a big centerpiece, instead place several trivets down the center of your table and place all the competing chilis there. We’d also encourage you to have several wine caddies available so you can spread out your wine and no one has to leave the table. Definitely use either our rattan placemats or chargers, so there are fewer chili drips on your tablecloth.

Happy cooking and tasting! We can’t wait to see the winning recipe.
