The Cutting Garden: July's Floral Stars – Zinnias, Snapdragons & Cosmos

Welcome to The Cutting Garden, our new monthly series celebrating the beauty - and quirks - of seasonal blooms. Whether you’re arranging wild stems for your entryway vase or just want to impress at dinner with a “fun fact about snapdragons,” we’re here to make your flower game just a little more magical.

This month’s lineup? Zinnias, snapdragons, and cosmos. Three summer show-offs, each with a story to tell.

Zinnias: The Confetti Queens

Zinnias are the extroverts of the summer garden - loud, colorful, impossible to ignore. Native to Mexico and beloved by butterflies, they bloom in a Crayola-box of colors and bring a punchy cheerfulness to any arrangement.

Why we love them:

  • They’re easy to grow, even for the “oops I forgot to water it” gardener.

  • The more you cut, the more they bloom.

  • They hold up like champs in bouquets - no wilting under pressure here.

Best paired with:
The Crane Vase – With its tall, elegant lines, the Crane Vase gives zinnias the lift they crave to hold their heads high. It’s the graceful backbone that matches their confidence and lets each stem take a bow.

Fun fact to drop at brunch: Zinnias were the first flower ever grown in space. NASA astronauts cultivated them aboard the International Space Station in 2016.

Snapdragons: The Drama Kids

Snapdragons have flair. With spires of bloom-packed stems that open from the bottom up, they’re your tall, theatrical friend who never arrives quietly. The name comes from the blossom’s resemblance to a dragon’s mouth - pinch them just right and they’ll even “snap” open.

Why we love them:

  • They add height and elegance to arrangements.

  • Their color range - from pale pastels to fiery reds - is ideal for texture play.

  • Kids (and kids-at-heart) love the snappy flower trick.

Best paired with:
The Original Lettuce Leaf Vase – Our signature stunner with scalloped edges and a grounded silhouette. It gives snapdragons a stage to shine, with just enough drama to match their vertical flair. A pairing that’s as classic as it is theatrical.

Whimsical tip: Harvest in the cool of morning and strip lower leaves to avoid rot. They’ll last up to a week if treated kindly.

Cosmos: The Cottagecore Muse

Cosmos are summer’s most poetic bloom- dainty, feathery, and always breezy. Native to Mexico and Central America, they dance in the wind and look best when tucked into loose, “I-just-gathered-these” arrangements.

Why we love them:

  • Their fern-like foliage adds softness.

  • They self-sow like it’s their job.

  • They thrive in poor soil with minimal fuss.

Best paired with:
The Dew Drop Vase – Soft, rounded, and just grounded enough to balance the floaty, wispy magic of cosmos. Keep it by a bedside or in a powder room for a breath of fresh charm.

Language of flowers moment: Cosmos symbolize peace, modesty, and love. A flower with its feet on the ground and head in the clouds.

How to Style July’s Trio

Zinnias, snapdragons, and cosmos play surprisingly well together. Use snapdragons to anchor your height, zinnias as your bold centerpieces, and cosmos for softness and movement. Mix-and-match vases from our Petite Vase Collection for a styled, effortless tablescape. Tuck in a sprig of basil or flowering oregano, and the room suddenly smells like summer dinner on the porch.

See You in August…

Next month, we’ll welcome dahlias, celosia, and sunflowers - those bold August headliners. But for now, enjoy these high-summer beauties. Snip, arrange, repeat. Your home (and your mood) will thank you.

Have a favorite bloom? Tell us what you’re snipping - we love a good garden gossip.
